In a State of Perfect Equilibrium: Collaboration in the performance Rest Energy
This essay will substantiate the point ‘All art-making is collaborative’ using Rest Energy (1980) by Abramovic and Ulay as an example. Many forms of collaboration come into play when works are shown in museums in front of an audience, however, this essay will focus solely on artistic collaboration. The essay is concerned with the following questions: what art-making in Rest Energy is, why the collaboration of Marina Abramovic and Ulay is crucial to this work, and what facilitates this collaboration. The argument is that the making of Rest Energy is inherently collaborative because it comes into being only through the process of mutual trust by two inseparable entities that make up one whole.
